I’m leaving you.

To tell you the truth, I fell out of love with you a long time ago. For all of my adult life, you were the only home that I ever knew. I grew up with you. I met my best friends with you. You made me who I am. For these things I can never thank you enough, but it is only now with a clear mind that I can see that you were holding me back. 

I’ve tried leaving before: Whenever things didn’t work out in a particular city or job, I had you to crawl back to. A shelter to lick my wounds and figure things out. I can’t afford to live my life like this anymore. I have to cut you out of my life.

My boxes are packed in the U-Haul. Contracts are signed. This is a done deal. 

I’m about to walk out the door, and for once I won’t look back. The nostalgia period of my life is over. It’s time to make new memories, and for once they aren’t going to contain you.

My keys are on the counter.
